Import tax on household goods/car/personal items

Has anyone got any experience with importing a car, furniture and personal belongings to Nassau from the US? I contacted customs and was told once the items arrive over there an official inspects them, calculates their value and charges you tax around 35% for household items and 57% for the car. How has this worked out for you?? Any tips for the process?
