Crime & Safety

We are in the process to relocate in the new year and have 2 young kids (6&8 Yrs old). I have toured St Andrews & Layford Cay schools and pleased with both but Now trying to decide where to live and then choose the school.
I am aware that crime is on the rise and my fear is home invasions.
Does this happen in gated communities like SandyPort or Oceans Club Estates? I will not be working and will be home during the days - please send me some advice on where we should look for a home and the reality of home invasions and other such crimes.
Is it safer to live in the East or West? My husband will be working downtown.
I am also interested in any comments on either St Andrews or Layford Cay schools.
