Hi All - I'm new, and soon to be working employee as a contractor on the BahaMar resort. So far, I've read back a couple years of posts and the information seems fairly consistent -- duty rates are near 50%, cost of living is relative of course, but generally higher than most US cities, Bahamian employer takes care of work permit, and usually the residency permit. Here are my questions after reading:
A. I'm a 26 yr. old single father, and plan on traveling 1-2 times/month back to the states. What do I need to be concerned with as far as travel back and forth?
B. Being a 26 year old extrovert, a social lifestyle helps me through a day. Relationships may be hard to come by at first, but where/how do you start - fellow employees, particular regions of an island, tourist locations, etc.?
C. Obviously, safety is mentioned time and again, and I've heard the "predation", if you will, can be very thought out and methodical, so what's the key to keeping safe and out of the eye of a criminal - keep a low profile, don't be flashy, keep your head down, etc.?
D. What kind of costs can you experience to travel other islands, and actually LIVE - fishing, scuba diving, exploration, island jumping, etc.? Let's say it's Saturday and I want to get up and go somewhere new. What do I do - find a boat/ferry/water taxi?
E. What is the access to the resorts - must you buy a room?
F. Do I really need to "hit the hay" when the sun goes down, or can I enjoy myself after dark?
G. Sounds like cable is out of the question, correct? .... for the most part?
H. What is the preferred method for cell phone service - I need to make calls, have a data plan, and text... assume this is 100% employer paid.
I. This question has been asked, but there haven't been many clear answers. Where do I meet others like myself, or how?
J. I like to exercise - are there gyms on the island that I can trust and shouldn't have a tough time getting to?
K. I've heard the west side of the island is the safest to reside. Is this true?
L. If you have a yacht or sailboat or mansion, can we just hang out and sip Coronas so I don't have to work instead? :) Kidding.
All jokes aside, this forum has been an immense help giving me some sort of idea of what to experience/how to prepare myself, but any ideas/information/opinions you can lend, I am greatly appreciative. Have a great day!
