Verizon International Calling Charges

Hello Folks,

Anyone have a fool proof system for NOT getting charged by International Calling fees (USA based plan)?

I have tried airplane mode and turning off all apps running in background (I believe!) but still get a charge the moment I turn on my phone. We have wifi we use in the Bahamas, Bahamas based BUT Verizon STILL, somehow, charges us that daily fee. Not texting or anything.

Any ideas other that have worked for you other than not turning on the phone AT ALL?
