North vs South of the Boca Del Rio Bridge???

My wife and I are looking to buy a place on Ambergris Caye. We thought about a condo but are now leaning toward a single-family home or beach front villa.

The big question I have has to do with North vs South of the Boca Del Rio Bridge. I have been told that north of the bridge is more desirable real estate than south of the bridge. We love going to the restaurants in San Pedro and walking the beach, so we really do not want to be more than 2 miles from San Pedro either way. Palapa's is also one of our hangouts for live music but we also love the deserts at Mackie's.

Any suggestions about areas we should look at and why (and opinions on the North vs South issue) would be greatly appreciated.
