Expat to Brazil from Scotland???

We are being transferred from the UK to Porto Alegre. Our child will attend the Pan American school there. My husband will work in Caxias Do Sul. How far a drive is that? And does anyone know about the safety in those areas. I have heard good and bad reports about going to Brazil and have real concerns about taking my child there. Please any advice would be helpful.
