VISAS

i'm currently in brasil on a tourist visa which expires in may so i'm trying to decide how to stay longer. some friends have told me to just cross the border every three months. i don't see how this works as they will stamp my passport on my way out, thereby seeing when i originally came in. i want to get a student visa but am encountering some problems. one person told me i could go to the brasilian embassy in argentina but most things i read say i have to go back to the u.s. however, i haven't lived there for five years and can't prove i have lived there the past year. i actually have no 'residence' anywhere. i got my tourist visa while i was living in ireland, but my visa has expired from there as well. i was hoping to get by this somehow and also be able to send visa app, etc..to a visa handling company so i could avoid going back to the states. also, if i do transfer to a student visa, will i have to wait six months before i can re-enter the country or will it simply be a different visa in my passport? any help is much appreciated...thank you!
