WARNING TO ANYONE THINKING OF BUYING OR RENTING PROPERTY IN BRAZIL: always make sure the 'real estate broker' you are dealing with is in fact a registered broker. There are thousands of fake brokers all over the country ready to con anyone they come across. A true real estate broker will be proud to let you have his/her CRECI number which you must confirm by checking the relevant CRECI website. You must always ask for the broker's full name, his/her CRECI number and CPF number in order to do the search. Just one of these elements will not get you the right information. For your information, CRECI means Regional Council of Real Estate Brokers and there is one for each Brazilian state; CPF is the Individual Taxpayer's Registration Number. Both these details are unique to each individual. To find the right CRECI website you must Google 'CRECI' and the state where the property you wish to buy or rent is located. Go to 'REGISTRADOS' and then 'Consulta' (on the left-hand side menu). Fill in the three top blanks and then click on 'Localizar'. If in doubt, you can contact me and I will happily do the search for you. I am against entering partnership with fake brokers because they abuse the profession and give it a bad reputation but ABOVE ALL they put client security at risk.
