IS Brasil safe ? Where do you live ?

Where do YOU live and is it safe there ? How long have you been there ?
Give me the pluses and negatives.

I lived in Brasil from 2001 to 2008 and it was pretty safe.
Lived in Santa Catarina and then drove up the coast to Joao Pessoa Paraiba. Know all of the coast from Porto Alegre to Fortaleza.
My trip north 5000kms was fun and uneventful.
The last time I was in BR I was in Recife and Joao Pessoa 2014. The economy was pretty terrible, no oil field jobs, nothing.

NOW I hear many cities are unsafe and downright dangerous; local busses being robbed on a daily basis, gangs robbing etc.

IS the interior a lot better, safer ? I would think so. Places like Bauru, Sao Jose do Campos, Belo H ?

Do you see it getting better ? I see a lot of articles about the Federal Police going into areas and cleaning them up, especially RIO.
