Buy in Bulgaria? Be Careful.

Just wanted to share some experience about having a house in Bulgaria. We are the owners of a rural house in a medium big village near the Black sea. We bought our house a couple of years ago at maybe half the price if not less of what a similar house costs now and that was maybe the only positive thing I can think about.

The problems began rightaway:

1- the first two weeks there was no water in the whole village! (We only could get some from the well of our neigbour! From what we understood water is a common problem in a Bulgarian village - 1 or 2 days without due to frequent problems with the old pipe system is considered "normal", during the summer this problem it`s much more frequent.

2- Problems with the electricity supply are also frequent, but in most of the cases last only a few hours up to a day. The most irritating black-outs can occur on Christmas and new years eve - due to so called "overloadings of the net"

3- the first year we went back home the gypsies (probably) broke in our house and stole almost everything that could be stolen; the second year, after whe put metal frames on all the windows and doors, they broke through the roof in the sellar but fortunately there was almost nothing to steal there.

4- In the villages, forget about internet! Telephone lines are so obsolete out of the bigger cities and towns that making a telephone call is sometimes a miracle!

5- Buying fresh products, even milk or meat from the local store is also in most of the cases impossible. So make sure to have a big town nearby for your food supply.

So just be carefull on where you are throwing your money and do not believe everything the agents say you...
