buying/living in Bulgaria

Can anybody please help my wife and i were looking forward to viewing property in Veliko Turnovo area in march to live there six months and uk six months but my wife read a report on the internet saying that it is unsafe to live in Bulgaria due to high crime rates,and if you leave your property empty for a visit home it will be broken into and emptied it has spoilt our dream so hence my question many thanks Reg
