Spelling

I may be missing something simple, but am having a problem with the spelling of Bulgarian words. Not in Cyrillic, but with 'our' alphabet. For instance, 'donkey' is said 'magare' but written in English dictionaries as marape. Does this mean that 'r' written in a Bulgar world is always pronounced as a 'g' and 'p' as an 'r'
