Working on a Temporary Residence Visa

Hi there

I currently live in Durban, South Africa and i am wanting to emigrate to Vancouver BC, what i was hoping to do first was visit Canada on a temporary residence visa from what i understand is valid for six months and as i tour the city and surrounding areas maybe try and find a job. And from there work towards applying for a work permit and so on. Would this be possible?
