Citizenship Test - Canada

I missed my citizenship test because I was working away from home and I got the notification too late: barely 2 weeks before the test date.

I now would like to accept an offer of work outside the country and return when the economic climate improves. Trouble is I have been told it will take another 3 months (roughly) to reschedule the test and apparently I have to be in the country to take it (ie I can't do it at a Canadian Embassy). I don't particularly want to sit around unemployed for 3+ months waiting for the test.

If they could give me a one month notification lead time I could fly back and take the test however it seems they can't do this.

Is there any way round this or have I been given inaccurate information?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.
