Background and Purpose
The Rhodes University Trust, USA (a tax-exempt, nonprofit organization) was set up in 1992 and became fully operational in 1993. Its primary purpose is to provide funding and support for educational activities conducted by Rhodes University in South Africa and other educational institutions and initiatives in the surrounding area.
The Trust was established by two Old Rhodians, Warne Boyce (1949), former CEO of Microbac Laboratories in Pittsburgh, and Neville Robertson (1946), a leading educational researcher for Phi Delta Kappa in Bloomington, Indiana. Warne and Neville had a vision of US-based Old Rhodians reaching out and helping their alma mater in what they knew would be an exciting but challenging period ahead in the “New South Africa”. Unfortunately, they are both now deceased, but we trust that they would be pleased by the efforts being made.
Operations
The Trust is managed by a board of directors, all of whom have volunteered their services and time free of charge. The board consists of at least three people at all times – the President, Treasurer and Secretary. It meets approximately once a quarter to discuss strategy, disbursement of funds and other matters of business.
Get Involved:Role of Rhodes US Trust and Trustees
The U.S. Board of Trustees is keen to find additional Old Rhodians who have time to devote to alumni relations and communications in the U.S. If you have talents, experience or inclinations in fundraising, online publishing, public relations, business administration, and contact networks, do let us know.
