Where do I start

So I'm applying for an IEC visa which I actually understand most of. My queries are mostly addressed towards housing and rent. From everything I have read about Vancouver, it seems to be the 'pricey' place to live. So being new to Canada is it smarter to find a cheaper city (perhaps somewhere in Alberta?) I've previously completed a working visa in the US where it is a pre-requisite that housing and employment be sorted and contracted before arriving in the US, So with the IEC visa how hard is it to find housing etc. Do i just wing it and stay in hostels before i can find rent elsewhere??
