living in Canada as a visitor

If we reside in Canada (will own a home) I understand we would be there as visitors.(we are both retired) With that status, it seems we would have to leave Canada every 6 months. How long would we be required to be out of Canada before we could return? A few days? 6 months? All very unclear.
