Air Conditions in Santiago?

I've read about the air pollution in Santiago and am concerned. I used to have asthma but over the past few years it has gone away although I currently live in the Phoenix, Az. area.
I was in Santiago in March of 2012 and never noticed much of a problem. So when is it supposed to get bad.
Also, is there an area to move to that would be somewhat less polluted?
