Visa Help

Hello, I am currently in China on an L visa. There is a school here that wants me to teach English for them and I have a question on if I can go to Hong Kong to get my work visa or not? The school has been to the foreign affairs office and everyone there seems to have a different answer on if this can be done. Can someone please help me? My L visa is due to expire in Jan.
