Breaking a rental contract?

I have heard that Colombian law states that 3 months of rent needs to be paid as penalty for breaking a rental agreement. Is this true? I signed a rental agreement with the owner of an apartment. They live there also so I have no idea if it is valid or not. I know it wasn´t a good idea, but isn't that what a deposit is for? I am more than willing to forego my deposit. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
