Amazing change

I worked in El TIgre Venezuela in the 90's and was called for a job on a drilling rig in Columbia. Flew into Bogota and was struck how beautiful it was. Talked to our engineers about the job then taken to a hotel downtown. Stepped 10 steps out of the hotel and had a attempted mugging. Back to the room and off the next morning to Yopal. Caught a chopper to the rig, no one allowed to take the road. Double fence of barbed wire and concertina with a army patrol stationed at the rig site. Two weeks later, job finished and went well, was offered a job in Columbia. NO THANKS, and was happy to get back to Venezuela. Now the question. What Happened? Can you travel around the country or are just the big cities or certain areas safe? I'm not crazy about big cities, so would it be possible to go to smaller towns. I speak Tarzan Spanish and my wife much better than me, so can get by. Spent a couple weeks in Loja Ecuador and it was good, but never even considered Columbia. Would love to visit, but had my mind set that Columbia was out of the question. Sorry if I'm asking questions that have been answered a hundred times before. Thanks, Strawn
