Phone Choices

I just revamped my phone choices when recently in the states. I've been meaning to do it, but never did. So this might help those looking for alternatives. I know we all have our own ways of configuring our phone choices, but hopefully this will add some food for thought.

So I bought a new unlocked phone with dual SIM capability (Galaxy S24). I had Google Fi for a few years and felt like it just wasn't a good fit anymore. They cut off my data in Colombia after a few months, so I was tied to wifi spending on avg 25 bucks a mo. for something I rarely used and for visits back to the states. I've always wanted to keep my US number.

I dropped Google Fi and transferred my number on a new plan with Tello. You can configure the amount of text/calling/data you need. For me, the total cost is 8/bucks a month. So I loaded the eSIM with Tello. Then I loaded the other with a physical SIM from Tigo. Now I have just one phone for my US and Colombian numbers. One whatsapp app for both numbers. Very convenient.

Honestly, I probably could get away with just the Tello account but I like having a Colombian number. If you haven't checked out Tello, you owe it to yourself to look at it. In doing my research, it's pretty popular with expats. They don't cut off your data and you spend what you want and they use the T-mobile network. So far, it's been really good. Curious to hear what others are doing.
