Renting an apartment

We have been living with my wifes family for the last five years here in Cali, Colombia. Now we want to rent an apartment of our own and running into some problems. I get my SS direct deposited in my Bank of America account back in the states but i am finding that apartments wont accept this as prove of income. The amoiunt is more than enough. Has anyone else run into this problem? Is there any way around this?
