From the 1950s through the '90s a slew of car and truck models from the Soviet block were imported to Colombia. Some of the earliest were traded for coffee. When I arrived in 2002 there were still a few around, Oltcit from Romania, Zaztava from Russia and of course Ladas both car and 4x4.. The Gualas or "jeeps" that transport people from the hillsides of Cali are seventies Romanian Aro Carpatis. In other parts of Colombia such as Guaduas, Cundina marca public transport vehicles are the earlier Carpatis based on the Russian GAZ. One of the earliest car imports was the Skoda Octavia from Czechoslovakia in 1961. Warszawa from Poland was sold from 1966 t0 68. I saw the pickup version. once in Cali.. I think my most unusual sighting was a Wartburg pickup that hailed from East Germany.
Most of these interesting vehicles are now off the roads due to Colombia's modernized and restrictive Tecno Mecanico regulations. A shame.
