Driving to CR from Mexico

Hi, all-
I'll be moving to Mexico this summer and will live there for the indefinate future. While there, I'd like to explore the rest of Central America, particularly CR, preferably driving. I have a 4X4 in good shape, but am wondering about any insights members of this forum may have about driving from Mexico to CR. For example, will a US passport plus Mexican resident visa suffice to cross the various borders between MX and CR? What about the rebels in Chiapas? Is it safe for a gringo to drive through there?

Anything any of you are willing to share would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Gary
