Postal "Service"

In 1998 after complaing about receiving empty packages from England and the USA, as well as greetings cards opened in transit, I was invited by Correos de Costa Rica to visit their center in Zapote. They explained that this problem of course, occurs outside Costa Rica, probably in Mexico and they can do nothing about it. In fact I was told, many bags of mail arrive here weighing as little as half the original stated weight of their contents.

If Correos was real a business, someone would take some kind of remedial action. My solution was to tell everyone to send nothing other than regular correspondence to my P.O. box here in Costa Rica and I thought no more of the problem until now.

When my wife recently became ill and passed| away, friends forgot my caveat and once more, I received three packages of gifts as well as several “Get Well” and “Condolence” cards opened, each with a printed note in English and Spanish from Correos, explaining how they had re-sealed each item, which had arrived to them in damaged condition.

Are those Mexicans just picking on me or have others perhaps shared my experience? I always thought the reason most Ticos dislike Mexicans (and all other foreigners) had something to do with football but perhaps mail-pilfering is the true reason.
