How much money to save?

Last year I proposed to my wife (then GF) on a boat near Mal Pais. We we're married in the Carribean (Turks and Caicos) and have been talking about leaving the USA since the day we left paradise.
As I try to screw my head on about what our mission is, I have started to think of questions... which seems to lead to more questions. So here is the first one. Let me say, I know that the answer really depends on so much, from the sort of lifestyle one wants to lead to the area he lives in. I get that. I am curious to know how much others put aside or are planning to put aside for their new life in CR?
We will likely land at some point in Guanacaste, but will also consider the Caribbean side, traveling for 6-12 mos before settling. We will likely avoid expat towns, we are not interested in living in the central valley, and will eventually seek naturalization or at least residency. To start, we will volunteer for Habitat or some such organization for a few months (forever?) to reboot our values.
I speak Spanish well enough that in short order it will become my daily language.
All that said, what did you plan for... or what are you planning for financially? Did you plan to start a business and how has it all been going?

Cheers.
