Expired Passport, Have Tica Wife & Child

Hello,

I've lived in Costa Rica full-time since 2008; have gotten married; had a child; purchased property and built a house; have several vehicles... and have never gotten residency.

Yea, oops.

I decided I should go through the simple process of attaining residency and realized -- just like everything else bureaucratic in CR -- it's going to be a nightmare.

The biggest issue I have is that I have REALLY overstayed my passport, by more than a year this time. In order to apply for residency, it must be the case that: "Toda solicitud de residencia debe realizarse cuando la persona extrajera se encuentra legal en el país; es decir, que su tiempo
de visa no haya vencido."

In the 20-plus years I've been coming down here and overstaying my passport, I've never left the country. It has never been an issue. But, I'm a little concerned about it this time.

I am aware of the 2014 law that will require I pay $100 for every month I've overstayed and would like to avoid that penalty.

Anyone know if there is a border checkpoint that is particularly lenient so I don't get jammed up after leaving for 72 hours?

Any other suggestions?

Sincerely,
Ryan
