Rentista Residency & Caja temporary suspensions

I've been looking into temporary residency in the near term to prepare for an eventual goal of getting permanent residency in the next 4-5 years when we will spend a majority of our year in CR.

For the last 10 years or so we spend 4-6 weeks a year in CR. We may be able to spend more next year due to covid situation making a bit easier to have work and school (2 kids) remote.

A concern I have about starting residency now, is the $450/month payment for caja.

In talking to an immigration service, they stated that its possible to suspend and restart caja but its a process and they don't recommend it. I am not sure if the response was motivated by the goal of encouraging participation in the caja system, which I can understand, or the actual difficulty of navigating the additional complication that stopping and starting. Probably both reasons.

Does anybody have experience with suspending and restarting caja during temporary residency? $450(!)/mo (we're under 55 )seems like a lot when we wouldn't even be in the country for 10 months of the year. Maybe our average would increase over the next few years, but for now I am just weighing the potential cost of moving residency forward before we really need to.
