Energency Travel Times

Hello Folks,

I am a long-time lurker, first time caller. I have been reading what folks have had to say and I am curious about the community's experience with travelling to the hospital in an emergency. From what I have gleaned from previous posts is that EMT are not really a thing, and so living in proximity to a hospital is key. And having someone to drive. I am getting on in years and I wonder what would happen if I needed help. I rather doubt that I would be able to drive myself if it was an emergency.

I googled all the hospitals, and I may have made a mistake as the majority appear to be situated around San Jose and Limon. I do see a number of provincial hospitals, and local clinics, but I am not sure if they are up to treating a stroke or cardiac event. I am mostly pretty healthy, except for the litany of ailments that can be directly attributable to working for a living, but I wonder what my needs would be in the future. My crystal ball does not allow me to see my own future, it seems. But I have been told that minutes count when in trouble.

That begs the question of how far is close enough? I know I am asking a difficult question because to have any amount of precision would need an assessment of the route to the hospital and the time of day, et cetera. Does anyone have an experience that would change their decision-making if they had to choose where they would live if they could go back and get a do-over?
