Should I be a Tourist or Resident?

I a US citizen and have recently decided to move to CZ to be with my girlfriend who is a Czech citizen and student. Ideally, I would like to to leave in 50 days so obtaining a visa may delay my departure. (I read that it takes 90-120 days). To make things a bit more confusing, I am planning on keeping my US job (working via the internet).

Is it possible to be a "tourist" for 90 days then apply for a visa while I am there? Would I need to actually leave and then come back since my status would change from tourist to resident? Would I need a work permit if I didn't have a job in the Czech Republic and would they give me a long term visa if I didn't have a job in the Czech Republic?

All so new confusing to me. I would greatly appreciate any advice or helpful suggestions.
