I'd like to suggest to those of you who are visiting Ecuador with an eye toward settling there that you try to arrange to stay with one or more host families while you are visiting. It is a great way to learn more about the culture and way of life in Ecuador. You can ask many questions in an informal setting. For example, you can watch the television news together or read the paper and ask questions. It is a great opportunity to practice or learn some Spanish, but many families speak some English as well. You can get great home-cooked meals! And it only costs around $15/day for a bed and two meals.
In my opinion, hotels put you in a tourist frame of mind, while staying with a host family starts to put you in a resident state of mind, which is more in line with the purpose of your visit.
I have stayed with the same host family twice in Quito with great experiences both times and would be happy to give the reference to anyone interested.
Just food for thought.
