I myself plan to spend my retirement in Ecuador with small fixed income but I still beleive US is better place to be born for a new life. I am also disenchanted US fantasy by economic disparity and occasional injustice but I don't see any other is much better than ours. I am reluctant to say that but in reality we are taking advantage of Ecuador poverty for our reason to move there for retirement. But if this is ones sole reason he or she may not most likely make that long. I see too much negativity against US for wrong reason which shouldn't be the primary reason to escape. The materialism that a lot of folks has mentioned is somewhat illogical and mis-interpretated. You work your rear end off to make ends meet or to get better or more is not materialism. When the value of one individual as human-being is determined by the wealth or social hierachy one posess because of the culture or tradition, we call that society as being materialistic. That socoiety usually has informal or formal social strata which is hardly mixed each other regardless of their written law, constitution, school teaching or whatever.
In this aspect US is at the bottom of rank as being matrialistic. I've rarely seen any American judges one with what he got. I never heard any American parent get angry because their Havard educated medical doctor son is getting married with a waitress. We kiss rear end of rich people and our boss but it has nothing to do with materialism. If you look at Ecuador at this angle, they are lot more materialistic than American. Someone who has lived quite long period with locals there has described this strife of Ecudorian.
Ecuador is not a good place to be born. It is a nice place to retire from US and live.
