Why all the fences

15 years ago
My wife and I are planning to move to another country and are still in the shopping mode. Have not been to Ecuador yet, but from browsing residential properties I have noticed that most of the pictures include massive fences around the property. I am not used to that in the USA. Is this merely a matter of of just wanting the borderlines defined or is it an indicator of something more serious?
