certificate of 'solteria' or civil status

I'm planning to move to Ecuador and my boyfriend is from there. We ultimately plan to get married there, and I understand that I need to get what they call a 'certificado de solteria' from the United States or proof that I am single and unmarried, and thus eligible to marry in Ecuador. Has anyone else had to do this? Where would I go for such a certificate? Thanks
