My husband & I are a gay male couple married in MA, living on the México/USA border (Sonora/Arizona.)
We've read Gary A. Scott's daily Ecuador blurbs for a year and have decided to at least plan a four week action/fact-finding trip to Quito prepratory to making A Decision.
Since neither of us are beach people and the Quito temperature sounds much more to our taste than the warmer and muggier ocean front properties, and also because we suspect that Quito has more plays, symphonies, and other cultural sophistication than the other options, we're sticking to Quito unless someone convinces us otherwise or if once we arrive there, for whatever reason, we discover that we can't stand the place.
We are looking for a gay friendly/safe neighborhood in Quito since they can have all the constitutional protections they want to stuff into their laws and it's probably meaningless to 95% of the population.
We're specifically interested in finding a gay friendly/safe neighborhood where we could live in Quito with native Ecuadorians (as opposed to fellow expates) while simultaneously avoiding a "gay ghetto" neighborhood in preference to a heterogenious and accepting mix of lots of different kinds of people.
Both of us are *totally* out of the closet and hold hands & kiss in public; it would be nice to find a neighborhood where we could live in peace and not with the constant tension that our open affection for each other provokes in provincial México.
Any pointers in the right direction will be gratefully received!
