tourist visa THEN resident visa

Hello All - Lots of you have been helping me out with my questions about visas, importing my car, cat, etc.

I figured I should clarify my situation a little so i can get some good answers to my visa questions and also questions about what I can bring down with me, etc.

So, my plan is to 1) go down on a 6 month tourist visa 2) somehow a resident visa and then 3) eventually get married. I don't want or plan to marry in ORDER to get the visa. In this way, I'd just stay down there and not return to the US except for vacation.

Question 1: Does anyone have experience getting the 'professional' type of resident visa and what is required?? In some places I've read all you need is some documents and a college degree??

Thankfully my boyfriend is Ecuadorian and has lots of contacts, including a lawyer who is willing to work with me on the resident visa, but I want to be as prepared as i can be when i get down there.

2) If I show up at the right time of year (not during high season), I can bring up to 5 suitcases. I was considering bringing my desktop computer down with me and possibly some nice pots and pans, all used. Has anyone tried bringing down a few household goods with them prior to having resident status? Any issues with doing so??

Thank you ever so much everyone!

Corrie
