pros and cons to residency

Like many expats my husband and I will mostly be spending 6 months a year in Ecuador. What are the advantages and disadvantages to acquiring a residency visa which will require us to be in country for 9 months two consecutive years. One plus is that we can bring a container of our own good in country without tax.....but what about those taxes? Please share what you know.
