buy a vehicle in ecuador info needed

We want to buy a vehicle.

Some expats are adamant "Do not,As a Gringo, YOU COULD LOSE EVERYTHING? "

others say"Could not be without one"

We are going ahead anyway, being in the category of don't think we can be without one.
As much as we enjoy the buses, they can be a little restrictive,especially when we bring the dogs down and want to take them on trips around Ecuador.
Due to SPEED BUMPS we think that something high would be better,a 4x4 .
We would also buy used and a DIESEL? budget is $20,000 to $25,000.
I discovered Patio tuerca on the internet and have been looking there.
Someone mentioned that there is a large car market south of Quito?
Any information or advice,would be very welcome.Anyone know anything about Chinese vehicles in particular SSANGYONG Diesel.BAD or GOOD REPUTATION?
