Visiting Ecuador in June for 17 days

Hi all

Well we are very excited, having just booked our flights to Ecuador. We arrive on May 31st and will be there for 17 days. We want to spend time in Cuenca, with visits to Valcambamba and Yunguilla area. We are considering eventually relocating and retiring to Ecuador so this is a sort of reconnaissance trip as well as a vacation. We also want to go to the coast to see Olon, Canoa and Crucita.

Could anyone please give advice about good, reasonably priced hotels. Also would it be better to rent a car to drive around or just stick to buses and internal flights?

Lastly, what would be the best way to find out about contacting/meeting expats to talk about buying real estate (without going on an expensive real estate tour!), and life in general in Ecuador?
