Just Need a Little Help in Organizing

During the week of September 19, 2010, three of us females are planning a trip to Ecuador. The initial trip is to look at locations with property purchase in mind. While I am aware of most of the common websites, I am also aware that this cannot normally be accomplished in a few days time. Don’t worry, the planning move is out 2 years out, but the initial location will need to be done fairly rapidly. I suspect that there may be several trips to rent for awhile and see the “lay of the land” – but I also don’t think some of us have the patience or fortitude so see it through to proper fruition.

We plan on arriving in Guayaquil and being ensconced in the Hotel Oro Verde. For some reason this seems to be the place to be (in the thinking of Orbits and Expedia) as quick location for communication with the Consulate, reputable attorney’s, safe modes of transportation and a means for screening reputable banking sources, real estate folks and, in general, folks that are trustworthy. Sound like true Gringos? – Unfortunately yes. We certainly don’t need, or particularly want, a 5 star hotel. If any of you have a suggestion, it would be greatly appreciated. We will be in need of a driver, transportation and someone with a great deal of patience and general knowledge of the areas. I will gladly accept any recommendations that are forthcoming in both areas.

The ultimate goal, as with so many others, is to secure property with beachfront access, with some ground to build, or add on if the need becomes apparent. A standing structure will be fine. Yes, this is most certainly a retirement move. Like most expats, we find that medical care is, in this case, an imperative as one of the final movers is a paraplegic.

The general area that we hope to settle in is somewhere between Mantas and Salinas. Since we have all been friends and family for many years, there are many concerns to be addressed but, I am sure, they can be worked out with satisfaction for all. We are all aware that along with the beauty and good, also comes the unknown.

I can’t possibly tell you how much we are looking forward to living in Ecuador. I can’t even tell you the excitement that we are all feeling. The only thing that I can possibly relate is that the search is now the subject of our daily conversations, the focus of our internet searches, and constitutes most of our daily phone calls. I am the only person in the group that has lived outside the US (Panama and Europe) and have travelled extensively (Europe, Middle East, Central and South America) so maybe that gives me a little more experience in what living abroad will truly entail. I am sure than more than a few of you have gone through the same kind of excitement, apprehension and pure joy at finding a new home whether here or abroad.
