Bank ATMs?

I am planning an exploratory trip to Ecuador this summer. When in Mexico, I have been able to go to ATMs at the local banks and get cash from my checking account in the USA using my bank card. The card has a VISA logo, but is a debit not a credit card. My question is, can I do the same in Ecuador?

Incidentally, I said "this summer" meaning June-September. I know the seasons further south in South America are opposite, but what are the seasons near the equator?

I have done a lot of reading about Ecuador, bud most of my sources have been related to IL publications, which I gather are not a favorite with this forum. Therefor, I would appreciate any new info about traveling to, exploring and moving to Ecuador.
