Visa versus Residency

Studying up on this and it looks like there are many pros and cons for each.
If you keep with visas you have to leave for 6 months every year - seems that could get expensive. But the residency seems very restrictive - can only leave the country for 3 months each year.
I am in the US.
Would appreciate knowing the decision some of you that live in Ecuador have made regarding this.
