Ecuador Primary Education

Seeing several of the opinions & concerns on this blog about Ecuador schools has prompted me to write my own observations.
I am married to an Ecuadorian & have an Ecuadorian step-daughter.

1) My step-daughter first arrived in the USA with very limited English 5 years ago. Her very limited English was aquired in Ecuador schools.
2) She was only 12 when first arrived. She entered high school. I had to argue with the High School district about her entry due to her age. They wanted to put her back into 7th grade instead of allowing her to enter the 9th grade. Once I brought up discrimination they allowed her in on a 'trail basis'
3) She made the honor roll the first semester. I informed my 2 sons who were also attending the same high school ' cats out of the bag boys. How can a young girl who can hardly speak english make the honor roll & you 2 cannot?) they were ammused as they knew it was true.
4) She stayed on the honor roll & graduated at 16.
5) She is now in college full time.
6) All 3 of our kids are in college.
7) My daughter complained from the start about how she was having to do the same school work over again she had done years before. And this is after she was already 2 years ahead. This 3rd world country prepars its students better for college than we do. Our lower schools are a joke.
8) When my oldest son graduated we went to his graduation ceremony. My wife was surprised at the whole thing. She wanted to know what the big deal was & why all the fuss. In Ecuador you are expected to graduate and go to college. All of my wifes family are college graduates ( both the husband & wife whomever I meet) and getting your high school diploma is treated the same as brushing your teeth. Its mandatory behavior.
9) My wife and daughter have never even seen pot or been exposed to drugs or seen gay student behavior. You want to talk about real culture shock.
9) Remember. In Ecuador the classes do not mix. I cannot say how the eduacation system works for the lower classes. My wife says the opportuniy is the same for all if they want to make use of it.
10) My wife is an absolute angel and the sweetest person I know. the first time our daughter disrespected her she was back handed on the spot. Ecuador children are still diciplined and have a deep rooted respect for their parents.
11) Here, my daughter is treated like a fish in a big sea. Every man & woman for themselves. In Ecuador my sons are put on a pedestal & treated like royalty in most circumstances.
12) Those of you who are deciding on Ecuador as a potential place of retirement or relocating at a younger age need to be aware that there is alot of inaccurate information on this blog based on opinions of those who do not know. I would ignore the opinions & listen to the facts of those who have actual experience of spending time in Ecuador.
