God Bless (Norte) America!

That’s right, God Bless the United States of America. I love The US! I’ve worked in 19 foreign countries (20 if you count Long Island) and I have found in my lifetime that the United States is still the greatest nation in the world – warts and all. Yes, our government is currently on a tear and our economy is shaken and the needle has fallen off our moral compass and crime is on the rise and blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. It’s still a wonderful place to live and rear a family.

Does that mean that I never want to leave it? Of course not! I love the world! I love the culture, art, engineering, architecture, music, food, traffic, people, pets, subways, taxis and everything else in every country I’ve been to. I love the buzz and stir of Istanbul’s Grand Bazaar. I love the gadgets food and shoping of Tokyo’s Akihabara district. I love riding the tube in London and walking through Oktoberfest in Dusseldorf. I love watching cricket in the lobby of the Hotel Intercontinental in Sydney and world cup football in that wonderful little pub Dunfanaghy, Ireland.

It seems so many of us on this (and other forums) are caught up in the escapism of the moment and are just looking for somewhere in which to hide from our problems and our life . I personally am looking for somewhere to run toward – somewhere that I can go and build and plant and grow and create life. Actually, I’m looking for several somewhere so I’m not necessarily thinking about patriating to a single location but more looking to enhance and expand my own personal life to include a number of semi-permanent locations that just happen not to be in the US. But I will always be a Norte Americano and this will always be my home (and the place where my house stands).

So, let’s all be positive about life and about our path we want to walk in life and about the places we’re going and the life we want to have and just go make the most of whatever life you have out there in front of you – AND STOP ALL THE WHINNING FOR CYRYING OUT LOUD.

Sincerely,
ExpatPM
