Interested in Cuenca

My wife I have been researching different places to retire like everyone else. We visited Belize during the spring, but we were dissappointed. We have lived and visited most of Europe during our military careers. Currently we live in Atlanta GA, and at 51 I have decided I want to slow down and enjoy the remaining years rather than continue working to retire later. Our situation is not unique, we have a 12 year old son who is a soccer player, and video game geek who is smart, but does not enjoy the cliqueish school environment here. We have a retirement income (military) of $27,000 per year, and are curious if you can really live well on that amount of consistent income. We have no bills to bring with us, and want to rent in the beginning like most people. What we need is honest opinions on cost of living (based our income), how well a 12 yr old (1 year of spanish in school) would adjust or be accepted by the locals. We got all exicted about Belize based on advice from a few people there, and once we arrived it did not live up to the hype, so please be brutally honest. We do not want to waste a trip to check out Cuenca and other areas of the country if it is really not worth it. Hope you all understand, and we look forward to your advice.
