cash during 2 week visit

my wife and i are coming to ecuador beging 1/15/11 for 2 weeks to explore the country and to decide if we want to buy a vacation place/retirement. no we are not buying the first time down. what is the best way to have enough cash for 2 weeks? we know to carry small bills but i don't want to be carrying around a couple thousand dollars in cash. would appreciate any suggestions as to what to do.
