Drive vs. Fly to Cuenca from Quito

I'll be arriving in Ecuador for the first time in February and want to drive from Quito to Cuenca through the Andes to take photos of the local color, etc. I have asked some expats their opinion and they all dissuade me and encourage me instead to fly. Anybody ever drive through the Andes and what is your opinion? Thanks.
