Questions about flights

My husband and I are interested in retiring to Cuenca, Ecuador. We have a few years to go yet but want to research everytihing and travel there to check out the area. We live in Orlando, FL and all of the flights I have seen are very expensive which was a surprise to me. I am not sure about airlines either since none of the "typical" airlines in the states fly there. Any suggestions? Are some months better for travel than others?
