Ecuador, foreign couple kidnapped for ransom, rescued

Last week there was a husband (German) and wife (Costa Rican) kidnapped for ransom at their hacienda by 12 individuals armed and dressed in military attire.

The wife's brother was bound and told they would be killed if he went to the police. The assailants were demanding 100,000 dollars for their release.

The brother did go to police and the unit of the police for anti kidnapping and extortion went into action.

They tracked the couple's vehicle which was stolen via satellite locator. Two of the assailants were taken into custody and one of them told police where the couple were located. lahora.com.ec

Fortunately, this type of kidnapping among foreigners is rare in Ecuador. However, it can happen and those living in rural areas may be more at risk. Remember, no matter how much money you have or don't have you will be seen by Ecuadorian criminals as being wealthy or having assets. It is also possible that any employees could be in on the crime.
